Tanzania albinos face violence - 25 Jun 08
In the past 18 months, at least 25 Albinos, including children, have been mutilated and murdered in Tanzania. Authorities say witch doctors appear to be linked to the killings. Albinism is especially prevalent in Africa, where it is estimated to affect as many as one in a thousand people. It occurs when the genes don't produce enough portions of a pigment known as melanin, meaning the skin is extremely pale. Yvonne Ndege reports from Tanzania.

Tanzania - Serengeti National Park
Tanzania - Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti ecosystem is a geographical region located in north-western Tanzania and extends to south-western Kenya between latitudes 1 and 3 S and longitudes 34 and 36 E. It spans some 30000 km2. The Serengeti hosts the largest and longest overland migration in the world, a semi-annual occurrence. This migration is one of the ten natural travel wonders of the world. The region contains several national parks and game reserves. Serengeti is derived from the Maasai language, Maa; specifically, "Serengit" meaning "Endless Plains". Approximately 70 larger mammal and some 500 avifauna species are found there. This high diversity in terms of species is a function of diverse habitats ranging from riverine forests, swamps, kopjes, grasslands and woodlands. Blue Wildebeests, gazelles, zebras and buffalos are some of the commonly found large mammals in the region. Around October, nearly 2 million herbivores travel from the northern hills toward the southern plains, crossing the Mara River, in pursuit of the rains. In April, they then return to the north through the west, once again crossing the Mara River. This phenomenon is sometimes called the Circular Migration. Over 250000 wildebeest alone will die along the journey from Tanzania to Masai Mara Reserve in upper Kenya, a total of 500 miles. Death is often caused by injury, exhaustion, or predation. The migration is chronicled in the 1994 documentary film, Africa: The Serengeti. ( source Wikipedia )

It has been those who stood with core universal principles and truth that make things happen....not those who look away in the face of grim realities of falsehood and evil marriage in Nigeria....how possible can this happen that Nigeria will develop with embedded hatred and differences? So, we will continue to say it that we are better off with autonomy at least, than the continued unitary system in which our eternal differences would continue to drag down efficiency and collective action.... Here, Rawlings testifies and projects Aburi Accord...can Gowon who said he did not understand then still say he doesn't understand now? How has Jos been? How has Nigeria been? Zanzibar - Tanzania
Zanzibar - Tanzania
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of the United Republic of Tanzania, in East Africa. It comprises the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 2550 kilometres (1631 mi) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of numerous small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, informally referred to as Zanzibar), and Pemba. Other nearby island countries and territories include Comoros and Mayotte to the south, Mauritius and Réunion to the far southeast, and the Seychelles Islands about 1500 km to the east. Zanzibar was once a separate state with a long trading history within the Arab world; it united with Tanganyika to form Tanzania in 1964 and still enjoys a high degree of autonomy within the union. The capital of Zanzibar, located on the island of Unguja, is Zanzibar City, and its historic center, known as Stone Town, is a World Heritage Site. Zanzibar's main industries are spices, raffia, and tourism. In particular, the islands produce cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper. For this reason, the islands, together with Tanzania's Mafia Island, are sometimes called the Spice Islands (a term also associated with the Maluku Islands in Indonesia). Zanzibar's ecology is of note for being the home of the endemic Zanzibar Red Colobus and the (possibly extinct) Zanzibar Leopard. ( source Wikipedia )

River Blindness - Tanzania
River Blindness - Tanzania
November 2009 It is the worlds second leading cause of preventable blindness, and yet its eating its way through the people of Africa. River blindness, or oncherciasis, affects more than 3 million people in Tanzania alone. African rivers are a source of life, but worryingly, they are also a source of disease. Black flies that infect the river carry parasitic worms, which form nodules under the skin before reproducing millions of offspring, causing catastrophic results for its victims. "In this particular village, the only source of water is this river. Says Dr Kabuka They need water, for washing themselves and for washing their clothes." The World Health Organisation is now relying on community-based programs to help the people in the river villages of Tanzania.

Tanzania's Serengeti appeal rejected
www.ntv.co.ke The appellate division of the East African Court of Justice has dismissed an appeal by the Tanzanian government against a ruling made by the lower regional court, barring it from building a 54-kilometer road through the Serengeti National Park. The Tanzanian government had argued that the court did not have jurisdiction to preside over an application made by a Kenyan animal welfare organization against Dar-es-Salaam's plans to build a road in the park that the lobby group says could disrupt the annual wildebeest migration.

Baby Hippo & Wildebeest - Great Migration Tanzania/Kenya
NOTE: Park officials told us we would be shot if we interfered so all I could do was videotape this and share the story with you. More safari footage at youtube.com/loracain. We went with the most incredible company CCAfrica.com now known as AndBeyond.com to see the Greatest Show on Earth - the Great Migration: 2.5 million animals who cross Tanzania's Serengeti National Park into the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya. Almost 2 million are wildebeests (Gnu) who have to cross 2 rivers to find grassland. Watching them and over half a million zebras and gazelles spread across the prairie (it looks like it's been mown by the time they're through)makes you understand just a little of what the buffalo herds in America must have been like. We were so touched by this baby hippo and wildebeest. Narrated by LoraCain heard on CNN, Wheel of Fortune, Disney and more. More demos at LoraCain.com
